You can hear the song here.
What started as a rough idea on January 9, 2024, eventually morphed into “Dust and Water.” Originally titled “Metadet”, the music and first draft laid the groundwork for what would become one of my most intricate creative journeys.
I began shaping the lyrics and vocal melodies on January 19, 2024. At first, I envisioned calling it “Dust Devils,” with the chorus hook:
Desert winds / Roam the highways, devils in the dust / Looking to hunt.
The first verse idea emerged during this session, along with scattered lines that would later find their way into the pre-chorus and other verses:
We are pawns in a game / We can’t comprehend / Struggling to find our place / Until the bitter end.
We’re led by a force / We can’t resist / Trapped in a fate / We can’t dismiss.
The pre-chorus played with the idea of human insignificance:
Humans are insignificant / If we believe in a supernatural force controlling our destiny.
Another line came to life, one that would later thread its way into the verses:
We’re just items on the Devil’s to-do list.
For months, the song title evaded me. I tested lyrics and melodies against potential names like “Answer to No One”, “Asteroid”, “No Choice But Forward”, and “Time, Devourer of All Things”.
By October 2024, the title settled briefly on “Devil’s Design”, and the melodies solidified. But it didn’t stop there. By the end of the month, it evolved into “Dust in Water” —and finally “Dust and Water”.
Sometimes, creation is as much about persistence as it is inspiration.
Now, crank it up. \::/
