You can hear it here.
I first wrote “Becoming” in October 2010 using Power Tab, layering all the guitars to sketch out the idea. The bones were there. I dug through my lyric folder from that time and found a page titled “Becoming” dated 27 May 2010.
It had a different chorus melody back then, but the core idea was there. The original chorus read:
No more running, stand tall and be proud
I am becoming who I was meant to be
No more fighting, I survived it all
I am becoming who I had to be
It carried a sense of triumph. A reflective, rising-from-the-ashes kind of feel. Burn away who you were, become who you need to be. No regrets.
But like a lot of things back then, the song went into hibernation.
I did some basic tracking on 29 March 2020… and then let it sit again.
In 2021, I tried to reignite it, multiple times. Lyrical attempts in March, September, and October came and went. Nothing stuck. July 2022 was when I officially marked it “On Hold” in my spreadsheet.
Then came January 2024.
Something about the bones of the song still pulled at me, so I reworked parts of the music and arrangement. I bounced an mp3 demo and started sitting with it, letting it speak to me. That version lived in my ears for a while.
By April 2025, it became a priority.
And then in June 2025, the final big shift came. I cut a section that sounded a little too “Crazy Train” for my liking. Instead of trying to force it, I leaned into what followed, a guitar melody that felt more honest to the song’s voice, and that became the replacement.
“Becoming” is about exactly that.
It took 15 years, but it finally became.
Crank it up. \::/
