You can hear the song here.
You can hear Part 1 here and the blog post for it is here.
As you’re aware, the origins of the song goes back to 1994 when i wanted to write a long progressive rock.
I had 17 minutes of a “no structure/riff-a-thon” demo. From that demo, an 11 minute version was created with structure.
The Part 2 version “Black Sun Rising” albeit with some changes and omissions is basically the 11 minute version I jammed with the bands I was in at the time.
The Chorus riff and harmony are new to this version however it was a leftover from the original “riff-a-thon” demo.
Lyrically, I had to do some rewrites from the original lyrics to fit the melody that I had in my head at this point in time.
I also used lyrics from previous songs I had like;
- “Rusted Veins” written 16 December 2012 and
- “Tick Tock Reflections” written 17 January 2024.
By adding a Chorus section to this version, I needed to come up with a Chorus hook and a song title.
The original words I had for it are;
Across the great divide it’s time for a new start
Lost in the darkness haze, broke and broken
I’ve lived through all that’s come what’s done is done,
I have survived it all, it’s a new day rising…
The last three words got me interested. So I started brain dumping. This is the order it went in;
- New Sun Rising
- New Moon Rising
- Glass Moon Rising
- Glass Sun Rising
- Full Moon Rising
- Red Sun Rising
- Black Sun Rising
- Red Moon Rising
- Red Sun Burning
- High Moon Coming
- Black Sun Falling
- Red Sky Falling
- Cold Wind Blowing
- Cold Rain Falling
- Clear Sky Shining
And then I changed the last two lines to “I have survived it all beneath a (insert title here).
And I tried all of the titles and “Black Sun Rising” fitted the best and it covered the subject matter perfectly.
Crank it up.
